About SaskatoonFjord

A free social game studio born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, with a visual identity borrowed from the neon streets of anime Tokyo.

Where the idea came from

SaskatoonFjord started as a side project between two developers who shared a specific frustration: free social games that claimed to be relaxing but were engineered to feel like anything but. Pressure mechanics, fake urgency, countdown timers, and dark patterns designed to convert curiosity into compulsion — all for a product where no money was ever on the table.

We wanted to build something different. A free game that felt genuinely generous — not a stripped-down hook for a premium product. One with a real visual identity rather than generic placeholder icons. One that treated responsible-play messaging as a design commitment rather than a legal checkbox buried in the footer.

The Saskatchewan connection is real. Both founders are from Saskatoon. The wide-open prairie sky, the long winter evenings with nothing but a good screen and something ambient playing — that specific quality of unhurried time is what we wanted SaskatoonFjord to deliver. The neon Tokyo aesthetic is the opposite of our geography, and that contrast is intentional. The fjord at night, lit from below by something electric.

What we built

The SaskatoonFjord tumble engine is a 5x4 round grid with eight custom anime symbols — each illustrated in our neon-cyberpunk style. The tumble mechanic cascades wins: matching symbols vanish, the remaining ones fall, new icons arrive from the top. Chains can form. The persistent session multiplier adds one to itself after every winning tumble, and it stays there for the rest of your session. Open the game at 1x, play for an hour, and leave at 34x. Next time you open the game, it resets — but within a session, that number is yours.

We picked the 5x4 grid because it gives eight symbols enough room to breathe. On a 3x3 grid, eight symbols would feel crowded and the paytable math becomes cluttered. Twenty cells across five columns create the right density: enough visual action per play to feel eventful, enough empty space between wins to make them satisfying when they hit.

"We do not need the game to be profitable. We need it to be good. If someone opens SaskatoonFjord for twenty minutes after work and closes it feeling like they spent their time well, that is enough."

Our commitments

We do not use dark patterns. No fake countdown timers. No "you were this close to a top score" messaging. No push notifications. No email capture. No social login. The game does not know who you are — it does not ask.

Responsible play is integrated into the design rather than appended to it. The age gate is genuine and cannot be dismissed with a misclick. The top bar on every page names four help organizations. The Responsible Play page gives real, practical guidance about when a free game stops being fun.

The visual format of a aurora game is inherently evocative of real-money play. We know that. We name it clearly on every page that carries legal responsibility. SaskatoonFjord uses the visual vocabulary of a play game because that is the genre we are working in — but it is firmly a social simulation. No money, no prizes, no exceptions.

What we do not do

We do not accept payment of any kind. We do not offer in-game purchases, premium credits, or paid upgrades. We do not sell, share, or broker user data. We do not serve personalized advertising.

What we do

We maintain a free social game, keep it technically current, update the responsible-play resources annually, and respond to contact messages within three business days.

How we measure success

Session length distribution. Return visits. Responsible-play page engagement. If players find the Responsible Play page and use it, that is a success — not a failure.
